Research Facilities

CAMR is facilitated with modern equipment for analysis and characterization of materials. In addition, there are several on-going research projects on instrument development related to material properties. CAMR is collaborated with Instrument Center of Applied Sciences for sample analysis.

XRD Rigaku Ultima IV

 ultima-iv

The Center for Advanced Material research of Faculty of applied sciences of University of Sri Jayewardenepura has Rigaku Ultima 4 X-ray Diffractometer that represents the state of the art in multi-purpose XRD system. The instrument has capability to probe liquid and solid samples in bulk as well as in thin films.

X-ray powder diffraction is a rapid non-destructive analytical technic primary use for face identification of crystalline materials which provides material characteristics like face composition information on unit cell dimension and texture. XRD is most widely used for,

  • Characterization of crystalline materials
  • Identification of fine-grained minerals such as clays and mixed layer clays that are difficult to determine optically
  • Determination of unit cell dimensions
  • Measurement of sample purity

GC-MS Agilent Technologies

gc-ms-agilant

Gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy (GC-MS) is actually two techniques that are combined to form a single method of analyzing mixtures of chemicals. The CIF housed Agilent’s 7890A GC that takes our lab to the next level of GC and GC/MS performance, including advanced separation capabilities. Applications of GC-MS include drug detection, environmental analysis, Food/beverage analysis and identification of unknown samples.
UV-Visible Spectrophotometers
Thermo Scientific GENESYS 10S Series
genesys-10

UV/Vis spectroscopy is routinely used in analytical chemistry for the quantitative determination of different analytes, such as transition metal ions, highly conjugated organic compounds, and biological macromolecules. Our UV-Vis analysis is performed with Thermo Scientific GENESYS 10S Series UV-Vis spectrophotometer loaded with a high-intensity xenon lamp and dual-beam optical geometry. The instrument has the following capabilities:

  • Scan speeds up to 3,600nm/minute
  • Have dual-beam optics for superior photometric accuracy
  • Capable to acquire data from the UV to the near-IR
  • Increase sample throughput with the integrated 6-cell changer
  • Measure unusual or challenging samples with a variety of optional holders for test-tubes, long path cuvettes and filters.
Atomic Absorption Spectrometer – Thermo Scientific (iCE 3500)

ice3500

Atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS) is used for determining the concentration of a particular element in a sample. It can be used to determine over 70 different elements in solution, and it is mainly used in water analysis, biological analysis and environmental analysis.

The AAS enables simple measurement of elements in a wide range of samples. The flame atomizer is ideal for the measurement of high concentration samples, while the furnace atomizer achieves sub ppb detection.

Nicolet iS10 FTIR Spectrometer
(Thermo Scientific)
is10-ftir
Infrared spectroscopy is based on molecular vibrations caused by the oscillation of molecular dipoles. Bonds have characteristic vibrations depending on the atoms in the bond, the number of bonds and the orientation of those bonds with respect to the rest of the molecule. Thus, different molecules have specific spectra that can be collected for use in distinguishing products or identifying an unknown substance to a certain extent.
Fluorescence Spectrometer
Thermo Scientific
(Lumina)lumina
Fluorescence spectrometry is a fast, simple and inexpensive method to determine the concentration of an analyte in solution based on its fluorescent properties. It can be used for relatively simple analyses, where the type of compound to be analyzed is known.
Gas Sorption Analyzer
(Quantachrome Autosorb IQ)
autosorb-iq
The instrument has a highly sophisticated gas sorption analyzer with up to three micropore analysis stations, and four dedicated built-in sample preparation ports. Indeed, any type of microporous solid will be able to analyze using the Quanta chrome physisorption system
Raman Spectrometer
(Thermo scientific DXR 2)
dxr2

Raman spectroscopy is essential to many applied scientific disciplines, including materials science, life science research, and chemical and biological engineering. Thermo Scientific Raman spectrometers enable to quickly create information-rich chemical images to advance the researches.

Ion Chromatograph
(Metrohm 930 IC Flex)
930-ic-flex

Ion chromatography is a well-established regulatory method for analyzing anions and cations in environmental, food and many other samples. Some typical applications of ion chromatography include:

  • Drinking water analysis for pollution and other constituents
  • Determination of water chemistries in aquatic ecosystems
  • Determination of sugar and salt content in foods
  • Isolation of select proteins
Thermal Gravimetric Analyzer
(TA Instruments SDT 650)
sdt-650
The CAMR has thermal analysis facilities to discover the advanced engineering and attention to detail that provide enhancement in every aspect of material science characterization. Using the TA SDT 650 you can experience the world’s finest simultaneous DSC and TGA. That provide information of weight loss heat flux changes of material as a function of temperature. The instrument has capability to analyze two samples at the same time to improve the productivity.
Universal Test Machine
(ETM – 5 KN)
etm5kn
Universal Test Machine (UTM) is the newest member of advanced equipment facilities at CAMR. This has the capability to measure Tensile strength, Compression set, 90o pealing test and puncture test with respect to the ASTM standards.
