These programmes are supervised by high-calibre academic staff in the department offering degrees in disciplines of plant and microbial sciences, biotechnology, and molecular biology. These MPhil and PhD research programmes are full-time.<\/p>\n<p>The Department of Botany has following research groups conducting and supervising&nbsp; a number of postgraduate research projects.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Plant Virology &amp; Endophytic Fungi : Emeritus Professor N. Salim<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Phytopathogenic Microorganisms &amp; Biological Control : Emeritus Professor N. Deshappriya.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Plant Tissue Culture &amp; Biotechnology: Snr. Prof. T.P.S.K. Senarath<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Crop Biotechnology: Prof. P. N. Dasanayake<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Palynology &amp; Plant Breeding: Dr. M. L. A. M. S. Munasinghe<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Mycology &amp; Phytopathogenic Fungi: Dr. D. S. Manamgoda<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Molecular Physiology: Dr. R. Wimalasekera<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Plant Systematics &amp; Floristic Studies: Dr. I. U. Kariyawasam<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Funding of the programmes is usually through research grants to the supervisor\/s by various funding agencies nationally and internationally. Very often, funding provides a monthly stipend for the student who would be conducting research on a full-time basis.
