Department of Sports Science

The Department of Sports Science is the 10th addition to the Faculty of Applied Sciences (FAS). The Department offers the B.Sc. Honours Degree in Sports Science and Management, which is a comprehensive Degree Programme aimed at producing graduates with a well-rounded academic foundation in Sports Science, who are effective advocates and leaders on the development of sports in Sri Lanka. The programme was first introduced in 2013 and functioned under Office of the Dean, FAS until DSS was established in 2017. The first batch of SSM students graduated at the General Convocation 2017.

The Sports Science and Management Degree Programme offered by the Department of Sports Science is an interdisciplinary programme which focuses on the areas of strength and conditioning, sports physiology, sports medicine, applied sports psychology, bio-mechanics, yoga, aerobics, theoretical and practical knowledge of 18 sports, teaching and coaching practicals, and sport management.  One strength of the Sports Science and Management Degree Programme offered by USJ is that the University has a strong knowledge base required to cover all areas of the field of Sports Science and Management, and hence, can offer a comprehensive Degree Programme in collaboration with all Departments of the Faculty of Applied Sciences as well as other Faculties within the University. At present, the Degree Programme is offered in collaboration with the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Faculty of Applied Sciences, Faculty of Management Studies and Commerce, Faculty of Medical Sciences and Gampaha Wickramarachchi Ayurveda Institute.

There is a growing demand for a Sports Science and Management Degree Programme as this is an emerging field in the Sri Lankan education system. With inter-organizational collaborations, the Department intends to enhance the depth and spectrum of Sports Science and Management education in Sri Lanka by providing numerous benefits to its graduates, University, society and overall to sports field of Sri Lanka.
