ELETTRA

University of Sri Jayewardenepura has become a User Institute at a Central Research Facility in Europe

ELETTRA is an international multidisciplinary research center of excellence, specialized in synchrotron (SR) and free electron laser (FEL) radiation and their applications in materials and life sciences, situated in Trieste, Italy. Synchrotron is a huge scientific machine designed to produce high brilliance high flux tunable X-ray and ultra violet (UV) radiation in a wide range of frequency and photon energy using relativistic electrons in circular motion. This “Synchrotron Light” can penetrate deep inside matter and allows scientists to investigate the world around us at the scale of atoms and molecules. SR beamtime for experiments in fundamental as well as applied research can be accessed by scientists from all over the world through their respective institutes with funding secured from various national/international agencies in the Europe. In order to apply for funding, the respective institute MUST become and registered as a User Institute at ELETTRA. All leading universities and research institutes in the United States (US), United Kingdom (UK), and Europe and in Asia-Australasia, with researchers working in cutting-edge thematic areas of research, have become the registered User Institutes at ELETTRA, which earns them a world reputation and a parity status as institutes steering research activities on topics with global interest.

We at the Department of Physics, Faculty of Applied Sciences, University of Jayewardenepura, are glad to announce that the University of Sri Jayewardenepura, also has become a registered User Institute at ELETTRA as a result of the liaison of Dr Kumarasinghe with ELETTRA, who is currently working at the Department of Physics and has extensive experience in the application of synchrotron radiation in Experimental Condensed Matter Physics related fields and has able to secure funding for SR beam times since 2009. Synchrotron beamtime at various beamlines can now be accessed to any researcher working at the University of Sri Jayewardenepura by submitting high quality research proposals to the panel of experts at ELETTRA. Proposals submitted under general user category undergo a stringent peer review process currently existing in the European Union (EU) and the beamtime for experiments will be granted only for successful applicants. Once the beamtime is secured, funding for experiments can be requested and secured through the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP), Trieste, Italy under ICTP-ELETTRA User Program, which is dedicated for the scientists from South.
