An outstanding number of 22 students including 11 MSc and 11 Postgraduate Diploma holders were graduated from the MSc in Polymer Science and Technology Program at the 50th Convocation of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura held on 30th October 2024 at the BMICH. The MSc in Polymer Science and Technology Program offered by the Department of Polymer Science at the Faculty of Applied Sciences is one of the oldest MSc awarding programs in the island with more than 50 years of history.
This MSc program comprises with seven modules comprising with Polymer Science, Polymer Technology, Polymer Physics, Polymer Engineering, Modern Advances in Polymer Science and Technology, Management, Polymer Practical and Polymer Research modules. Candidates who successfully complete all the seven modules are awarded with the Master of Science in Polymer Science and Technology Degree and candidates could obtain a Postgraduate Diploma in Polymer Science and Technology without completing the research component.
The lecturer panel of this MSc program is highly qualified with PhDs with industrial experiences. A considerable amount of the lectures is conducted by visiting lecturers who are working in leading polymer related industries in the island. The alumni of this MSc program with its very long history are greatly scattered among the vast polymer related industries around the country as well as abroad. These newly graduated students are joining the prestigious alumni network of Polymer Science graduates from the University of Sri Jayewardenepura.
Recently, a small celebration was held at the Department of Polymer Science to commemorate this happy occasion, with participation from all the department staff and a few graduates.
The Department of Polymer Science is thrilled to announce the successful completion of our participation in the COMPLAST 2024 and RUBEXPO 2024 exhibitions, held at BMICH from the 30th of August to the 1st of September. Our stall served as a dynamic platform to showcase the department’s cutting-edge research, technological innovations, and contributions to both the academic and industrial spheres of polymer science.
We were able to engage with a diverse range of visitors, from industry professionals to academics and students, effectively highlighting the department’s capabilities and achievements. This exposure not only elevated our presence on a global stage but also led to several exciting collaboration opportunities with key industry stakeholders.
We look forward to leveraging these partnerships to further enhance our research, teaching, and community engagement efforts.
The Department of Polymer Science at the University of Sri Jayewardenepura has experienced a significant upgrade in its infrastructure, thanks to the initiative of the MSc in Polymer Science and Technology 2013-2014 Batch alumni. Their generous efforts led to the partitioning of the lecture hall, creating versatile spaces conducive to various teaching formats and promoting interactive learning.
The partitioned lecture hall optimizes space utilization, allowing for lectures, seminars, workshops, and group discussions. This flexibility caters to diverse learning needs while fostering collaboration and teamwork among students. Improved acoustics and visual communication enhance concentration and engagement, elevating the overall learning experience.
The alumni’s commitment to academic excellence and philanthropy is evident in their investment in the department’s infrastructure. Their initiative not only enhances the physical environment but also symbolizes a deep bond between the department and its alumni, united by a shared passion for polymer science. The Department of Polymer Science extends its sincere gratitude to the MSc in Polymer Science and Technology 2013-2014 Batch alumni for their invaluable contribution. Their initiative exemplifies a commitment to fostering innovation and excellence in polymer science education and research, ensuring the department continues to thrive as a center of academic excellence.
Professor Hemanth Noothalapati, a well-known researcher from Shimane University, Japan, visited the Department of Polymer Science on March 18, 2024, at the department’s invitation. His fields of interest include analytical chemistry, Raman spectroscopy, data analysis, artificial intelligence, and machine learning. During his visit, he delivered a talk on the scientific applications of Raman spectroscopy and engaged in knowledge-sharing sessions related to this field. In addition, he interacted with research presentations given by selected students from the Department of Polymer Science for their application to the Sakura Science Exchange Program at Shimane University.
Professor Hemanth also met with the Dean of the Faculty of Science to discuss potential research collaborations. Furthermore, he had the opportunity to meet with the Vice Chancellor of the university to explore opportunities for research collaboration between the two universities. These discussions proved fruitful, leading to successful outcomes.
