ChemSoc Annual General Meeting- 2023

The 26th Annual General Meeting of the Chemical Society of the Department of Chemistry, University of Sri Jayewardenepura, was held on the 12th of January, 2023 at the C1 Lecture Theater from 3.30 p.m. onwards. The ceremony was presided over by Prof. Champa Jayaweera, Head of the Department of Chemistry, lecturers, demonstrators, and students of the Department of Chemistry.

With the lighting of the oil lamp followed by the singing of the University Anthem, the Annual General Meeting commenced. Notably, the 20th Edition of ‘The Crucible’ Magazine, the Annual Magazine published by the Chemical Society, was launched during the ceremony by the junior editor, Ms. Prasadi Attanayake on behalf of the editor, Mrs. Charitha Janaki. Another key event was the presenting of the ‘Award of Academic Excellence’ to students (of the last three batches) who had secured the highest chemistry GPA by the end of their second year. The award recipients were Ms. Thepuni Kaluarachchi, Ms. Sachini Deshapriya and Ms. Nipuni Dehigampala for academic years 2020, 2021, and 2022 respectively.

Dr. Lalinda Palliyaguru was appointed as the Senior Treasurer of the Chemical Society for the year 2022/2023 by Prof. Champa Jayaweera. The previous two tenures of the society were spearheaded by Dr. Isurika Fernando, former Senior Treasurer of the Chemical Society under the guidance of the chief advisors, Prof. Nilwala Kottegoda, former Head of the Department of Chemistry, and afterwards under the guidance of Prof. Champa Jayaweera.

(Coordinating Secretary), Ms. Anupama Buddhipala (Junior Treasurer), Ms. Sonia Palihakkarage (Media Coordinator), Ms. Prasadi Attanayake (Editor), Ms. Minduli Perera (Junior Editor), Mr. Hirusha Liyanage and Ms. Ineesha Piumali (Editorial Board members), and the committee members were: Ms. Imesha Ratnayake (Chemistry Honours Part 2), Ms. Aveesha Vithanage ( Industrial Honors Part 2), Ms. Punsarasi Kannangara (Chemistry Honours Part 1), Ms. Nirmani Perera (Industrial Honors Part 1), Mr. Lakshan Chathuranga and Mr. Dilranga Rathnayake (General degree 3rd year), Mr. Lakshan Dharmawansha and Mr. Kavindu Lochana (General degree 2nd year), Mr. Pujitha Alagiyawanna and Mr. Chamindu Kanishka (General degree 1st year).

Furthermore, an amendment to the constitution was brought forth by Prof. Champa Jayaweera. In addition, Prof. Pahan Godakumbura curated a session to pool new ideas and suggestions for the upcoming year. It was indeed a memorable ceremony with the participation of a large crowd which indeed marked the beginnings of yet another extraordinary journey in the effort towards ‘bringing chemistry closer to the lives of chemistry undergraduates’.

Graduates of the Department of Chemistry Win ‘Best Presenter Award’ at the 27 th International Forestry and Environment Symposium 2023

The Department of Chemistry is proud to announce that two of its recent graduates were able to
win the ‘Best Presenter Award’ at the 27 th International Forestry and Environment Symposium
2023 held on the 27 th and 28 th of January 2023. The International Symposium is organized
annually by the Department of Forestry and Environmental Science, USJ to provide an
international platform to budding young researchers to present and publish their research
findings.
The two winners were Mr. Sandeep Hemachandra and Ms. Manesha Fernando.

Mr. Sandeep Hemachandra presented his undergraduate research; ‘Impacts of Organic and Non-
Organic Cultivation Practices on Soil Fertility Parameters of Selected Paddy Lands Based on the
Duration of Cultivation in Wet and Intermediate Climate Zones of Sri Lanka’, under the session
of Geology, Soil and Water Resource Management – Part 1. His research was supervised by Prof.
Pahan Godakumbura and co-supervised by Prof. M. A. B. Prashantha and Dr. Asitha Cooray.
The other award was secured under the session of Environmental Engineering and Green
Technology-Part 1 by Ms. Manesha Fernando. Her undergraduate research focused on the
research area of ‘Preparation and Characterization of NPK Nutrient Loaded Electrospun
Cellulose Acetate Nanofiber Mat to be used as a Slow-release Fertilizer’. Her research was
supervised by Dr. Imalka Munaweera and co-supervised by Prof. Nilwala Kottegoda.
While the Department of Chemistry extends its warmest wishes to the two winners, it also
extends a deep sense of appreciation to all the supervisors and co-supervisors who were
instrumental in this remarkable achievement. It is in fact a testimony to the fact that the
Department of Chemistry continues to provide its undergraduates with the best research
experience it has to offer.

Fire Awareness Program – 2022

A “Fire Awareness Program” was conducted by the Fire Service Department on the 22nd of December, 2022 in front of the Chemistry Department premises. This event was organized by the Department of Chemistry in collaboration with the Staff Development Centre, University of Sri Jayewardenepura in order to raise awareness among the lecturers, technical officers and lab attendants on the fire safety protocols to be followed in all the laboratories within the department.

The Opening Ceremony of New Undergraduate Research Laboratory

The opening ceremony of the new undergraduate research laboratory took place on Friday, the
16 th of December, 2022, with the presence of Senior Prof. Sudantha Liyanage, the Vice-
Chancellor of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura. With the inception of this project by Prof.
Nilwala Kottegoda, the former Head of the Department of Chemistry, followed by the
unwavering support from our Vice-Chancellor, the New Undergraduate Research Laboratory
became a reality that can undoubtedly enhance the undergraduate research experience. The lab
has a student capacity of 50 and is to cater to the undergraduate research students of the
Department of Chemistry. The project coordinator, Dr. Chandima Narangoda, drove this project
towards success with diligence.

The opening ceremony was presided over by Prof. Upul Subasinghe, Dean of the Faculty of
Applied Sciences, Prof. Pradeep Jayaweera, Dean of the Faculty of Aquatic and Bioresources,
Prof. Champa Jayaweera, Head of the Department of Chemistry, Mrs. Yashoba Abeysinghe,
Assistant Registrar, Mrs. Uthpala Dissanayaka, Assistant Bursar, Mr. Asanka Karunaratne,
Works Engineer, lecturers of the Department of Chemistry, its non-academic staff, demonstrators
and the students.

A special thank you goes out to some of the Alumni members of the Department of Chemistry
for their financial assistance for the fundraising project related to this project. Undoubtedly, the
support rendered by the present Head of the Department of Chemistry guided this project
towards succession. The Chemical Society of the Department of Chemistry is kindly
remembered for their assistance in organizing the opening ceremony of this new undergraduate
research laboratory.
