Prof. N M S Sirimuthu Appointed as the Commissioner of the Sri Lanka Inventors Commission

Prof. N M S Sirimuthu, Professor, Department of Chemistry, University of Sri Jayewardenepura is appointed as the commissioner of Sri Lanka Inventors Commission. Professor Sirimuthu obtained his B.Sc degree in chemistry from the University of Sri Jayewardenepura and a PhD degree from the Queen’s University of Belfast, United Kingdom. Following that he completed multiple postdoctoral fellowships in Queen’s University, Belfast, UK, National University of Ireland, Galway, Republic of Ireland, University of Glasgow, UK, and the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow, UK before he joined as a senior lecturer at the Department of Chemistry University of Sri Jayewardenepura. Professor Sirimutu is a highly cited researcher with a h-index of 17 with more than 40 peer-reviewed papers.

An Industrial Training Workshop organized by the Department of Chemistry, USJ was held on 4th December 2021 with the participation of 18 employees from the Hayleys group. The chief guest of the inauguration was Dr. Upul Ratnayake, General Manager, Technical Research and Development, Hayleys Group – Dipped Products PLC. A lecture on laboratory glassware, equipment, and handling techniques was conducted by Dr. Imalka Munaweera, followed by a lab session. Dr. Asitha Cooray conducted the evening session on analytical samples, measurements, and numbers.

Interactive Session with Chemistry Alumni on Higher Education Opportunities – Conducted by ChemSoc

The Chemical Society of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura organized ‘An Interactive Session on Higher Education Opportunities with Chemistry Alumni’ on Sunday, the 28th of November, 2021, from 6.30 p.m. onwards with the participation of over 150+ participants. USJ chemistry alumni across different countries shared their valuable knowledge and experience with the participants. The speakers were Mr. Ushan Kulanthunga from Shizuoka University, Japan. Mrs. Sureka Sandamali from the University of Alberta, Canada. Mr. Chamila Fernando from Simon Fraser University, Canada. Mrs. Seka Seneviratne from the University of Milan, Italy and the University of Melbourne, Australia. Ms. Dinushi Wanigarathna from Swinburne University of Technology, Australia. An engaging Q &A session followed the presentations of the speakers. Overall, it was a very successful webinar indeed!
