The University of Sri Jayewardenepura (USJ) proudly emerged as the second runner-up in the SLAAS-E2 Inter-University Undergraduate Chemistry Quiz Competition of 2023

In a display of collective chemistry prowess, a team of chemistry undergraduates from the University of Sri Jayewardenepura secured the second runner-up position at the Inter-University Undergraduate Chemistry Quiz Competition organized by the Sri Lanka Association for the Advancement of Science (SLAAS) Section E2.

The competition comprised two rounds. The initial round, conducted via Zoom, was held on August 05th, 2023. Subsequently, the semi-final and final rounds unfolded on August 19th, 2023, at the SLAAS headquarters, Colombo 07.

They competed fiercely against the University of Colombo, University of Kelaniya, and the Institute of Chemistry Ceylon during the semi-final round. The team from the University of Sri Jayewardenepura expressed sincere gratitude to their lecturer-in-charge, Dr. Tharindu Senapathi, for his invaluable guidance and unwavering support.

The certificates of achievement were formally presented during the 79th Annual Session Ceremonial Inauguration of SLAAS, held on December 10th, 2023, at the BMICH, Colombo 07.

Chemists from University of Sri Jayewardenepura emerged as the first runner up at the SLAAS Inter-university Undergraduate Poster Competition

In a proud moment for the University of Sri Jayewardenepura, a team of talented undergraduates from
the Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Applied Sciences, achieved a remarkable feat by securing the
2nd place in the SLAAS Interuniversity Poster Competition. The competition, held on the 29th of July
2023, revolved around the theme “Post-Harvest Technologies – Chemistry & Applications,” showcasing
the students’ prowess in the field.

The winning team comprised the following dedicated undergraduates:

  2. W.P.A. Avishka Thathsara
  3. K.T.G. Amaya Haripriya
  4. M.G.S. Nisansala
  5. S.A.V.C. Samarasinghe

Under the capable guidance of Dr. Chandima Narangoda, the lecturer in charge, the team navigated the
complexities of the theme with finesse, eventually earning recognition for their outstanding
performance. They acknowledged the encouragement they received from the Head of the Department
of Chemistry, Prof. Champa Jayaweera and the other lecturers of the department.

The culmination of their hard work and dedication was witnessed at the awarding ceremony held on
the 10th of December 2023 at the Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall (BMICH). The
event served as a platform to recognize and celebrate the achievements of the students, bringing
together academia, professionals, and industry leaders.
