Mr. Damith D. Lekamge Receives Prof M. U. S. Sultanbawa Award for Research in Chemistry-2022

Mr. Damith D. Lekamge, a student of the Department of Chemistry, University of Sri Jayewardenepura,
is the recipient of the Prof M. U. S. Sultanbawa Award for Research in Chemistry – 2022 for the unique,
distinguished, and significant contribution made to the cause of Science, Chemistry, Education and
Research in Sri Lanka. This prestigious award is awarded by the Institute of Chemistry Ceylon (IChemC)
for the best research paper presented at the 51 st Annual Sessions titled, “Synthesis and characterization of inclusion complexes of Ageratum conyzoides L. essential oil in β-cyclodextrin”.

His work was supervised by Dr. Isurika Fernando, Senior Lecturer, Department of Chemistry, University of Sri Jayewardenepura. This research project was focused on the synthesis and characterization of Ageratum conyzoides L. essential oil in β-cyclodextrin inclusion complexes towards their potential applications. The award was presented at the Inaugural Ceremony of the 52 nd Annual Sessions of the IChemC on the 14 th of June 2023, at the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute (SLFI).

Congratulations, Dr. Imalka Munaweera, for being selected as one of the top 100 scientists in Asia

Dr Imalka Munaweera from the Department of Chemistry has been honoured and included in the top Asian Scientist 100 for the year 2023. The most accomplished scientists in Asia are highlighted in this illustrious list, which the renowned science and technology publication Asian Scientist put together.

Dr Imalka Munaweera is one of the winners of the 2021 OWSD-Elsevier Foundation Award for Early-Career Women Scientists in the Developing World. She was recognized for her research that focused on fabricating different functionalized materials, nanoparticles and nanocomposites for industrial applications—ranging from drug delivery to water filtration and even minimizing the post-harvest losses of fruits and vegetables.

USJ emerges as the Runner Up in Annual Inter-University Debate Competition by Institute of Chemistry Ceylon

The team of Chemistry Undergraduates from the University of Sri Jayewardenepura, who represented the university at the Annual Inter University Debate Competition organized by the Institute of Chemistry Ceylon (IChemC) on March 4th, 2023, secured the first runner-up position in the competition.

Eight students from the university participated in the competition: Govini Perera, Hirusha Liyanage, Minduli Perera, Devin Dharmaratne, Sajani Pathiranage, Darshitha Dilshan, Keshala Gunarathna and Vindula Vidarshana. They competed against teams from other universities such as University of Peradeniya, University of Ruhuna, Rajarata University of Sri Lanka and the College of Chemical Sciences.

The competition consisted of two sessions where each team debated with all the other teams under the league method. The team from College of Chemical Sciences won the competition while Rajarata University of Sri Lanka came third. The University of Sri Jayewardenepura team thanked their Lecturer in Charge, Prof. Theshini Perera, and Ms. Manesha Fernando for their guidance and support. They also expressed their gratitude to their past debating captain, Lasni Nishshanke, for her valuable input during their practice sessions via Zoom. They acknowledged the encouragement they received from the Head of the Department of Chemistry, Prof. Champa Jayaweera and the other lecturers of the department.

The team also appreciated Dr. Kushan Weerasiri, Chairperson of the Inter- University Debating Committee and the Institute of Chemistry Ceylon for providing them with an opportunity to showcase their skills and engage in intellectual discussions as young scientists.
