Notice: Inter-University SLAAS Poster Competition 2022 Registration for the Selection

The SLAAS Poster competition is an annual poster competition organized by the Sri Lanka Association for the Advancement of Science (SLAAS).

The Department of Chemistry is selecting one student team for each of the following themes given below to represent our university in this poster competition.

  • Theme 1 – Chemistry for smart and sustainable agriculture
  • Theme 2 – Role of chemistry in alternative energy
  • Theme 3 – Chemistry in value addition to Sri Lankan natural resources

We would like to invite student teams (composed of 05 students for each team) to register for the selection rounds conducted by the Department of Chemistry.

The interested student teams can submit a duly completed registration form to Dr. Chandima Narangoda (narangoda@sjp.ac.lk) indicating the poster theme and the team details on or before July 26th, 2022. The submissions after this date, incomplete forms and forms which do not comply with the criteria will not be accepted.

Ms. Imesha Lakmini Hettige receives Prof M. U. S. Sultanbawa Award 2022 for Research in Chemistry

Ms Imesha Lakmini Hettige, a student of the Department of Chemistry, University of Sri Jayewardenepura, is the recipient of the Prof M. U. S. Sultanbawa Award – 2022, awarded by the Institute of Chemistry Ceylon. It was presented at the Inaugural Ceremony of the 51st Annual Sessions of the Institute of Chemistry Ceylon on the 22nd of June, 2022, at the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute (SLFI). The award was presented to the paper titled, “Synthesis and characterization of platinum complexes with ethylenediamine and diethylenetriamine sulphonamide ligands towards biological applications”. Her work was supervised by Prof. Theshini Perera at the Department of Chemistry, University of Sri Jayewardenepura. The research essentially concentrated on the synthesis of N-sulphonamide ligands and their platinum complexes, which would be useful for anti-cancer and fluorescence imaging applications. This prestigious award is awarded to the best research paper presented at the Annual Sessions of the Institute of Chemistry Ceylon, recognizing the unique, distinguished and significant contribution made to the cause of Science, Chemistry, Education and Research in Sri Lanka.
