Ms. Rizana Azees, a student of the Department of Chemistry, University of Sri Jayewardenepura won first place in the Inter-University undergraduate thesis competition in Chemistry and Biochemistry-2021 organized by Sri Lanka Association of Advancement of Science (SLAAS), held on 2nd October 2021. She won the gold medal out of 13 contestants who participated in the final round from various universities and higher educational institutes in Sri Lanka. The title of her undergraduate thesis was “Microwave-assisted one-pot multicomponent synthesis of indole derived fluorometric probe for detection of Co2+ ions”. The research mainly focused on the synthesis of 3-substituted indole derived chemosensor using the green synthetic approach to detect Co2+ ions in micro-molar concentrations. The project was supervised by Dr. Upul Kumarasinghe and Co-supervised by Dr. Asitha Cooray at the Department of Chemistry, University of Sri Jayewardenepura. Day 2 of the industrial training workshop organized by the Department of Chemistry, University of Sri Jayewardenepura, was held on December 18th, 2021. A session on good laboratory practices was conducted by Dr. Asitha Cooray. The evening session was conducted by Dr. Mahesh Karunarathe on laboratory safety and proper laboratory conduct. The workshop was concluded after the head of the department, Professor Nilwala Kottegoda, awarded certificates of completion to the participants
