The Department of Chemistry is excited to announce the remarkable achievement of one of our Chemistry Special Degree undergraduate students at the 1st International Research Conference on Chemical and Process Engineering (ChemEICon 2024), held on June 27th, 2024, at the University of Moratuwa.
Ms. Harindi Shashinika Wirasagodaarachchi, under the mentorship of Dr. Isuri Weeraratne, was honored with the Best Extended Abstract Award for her abstract titled “Study of Aluminum Corrosion Inhibition Using Self-assembled Layers of Schiff Base Ligand” in the Process Technology and Innovation category.
Congratulations to Senior Professor Sudantha Liyanage from the Department of Chemistry on his appointment as the Chairman of the Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation. This prestigious role is a testament to his exceptional leadership and dedication to excellence. We are confident that under his guidance, the Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation will continue to thrive and achieve new heights. We extend our heartfelt congratulations and best wishes to Professor Liyanage as he embarks on this exciting new journey.
Undergraduates from the Department of Chemistry at the University of Sri Jayewardenepura won the SLAAS Inter-University Undergraduate Poster Competition under Theme 1 and the Best Green Chemistry Poster Award. In a proud achievement for the University of Sri Jayewardenepura, a team of talented undergraduates from the Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Applied Sciences achieved a remarkable feat by securing 1st place in the SLAAS Inter-University Undergraduate Poster Competition 2024 under the theme “Chemical approaches for sustainable urban waste management” and the “Best Green Chemistry” Poster Award 2024, which was awarded by the Sri Lanka Association of Advancement of Science: Section E2, in Collaboration with the SLAAS Environment Committee, held on the 01 st of June 2024. The winning team comprised the following dedicated undergraduates:

With the expert guidance of Dr. Chandima Narangoda, the Lecturer-in-charge, and Dr. Asitha Cooray’s immense assistance, the team skillfully tackled the complexities and broad nature of the theme, ultimately gaining recognition for their exceptional performance. The team expressed gratitude for the support from the Head of the Department of Chemistry, Prof. Champa Jayaweera, and the other lecturers in the department.
University of Sri Jayewardenepura participated in the Annual Inter-University Debate Competition organized by the Institute of Chemistry Ceylon (IChemC) on the 27th of April 2024 and secured the first runner-up position at the competition.
Eight students from the Department of Chemistry participated in the competition: Minduli Perera, Devin Dharmarathne, Avishka Thathsara, Darshitha Dilshan, Keshala Gunarathna, Hashma Imnisar, Wehara Gunawardena and Aaysha Sufran. They competed against two teams from the University of Colombo and the College of Chemical Sciences.
The competition was conducted according to the league method, where each team debated with all the other teams. The team from the College of Chemical Sciences won the competition, while the University of Colombo emerged third. The team from the University of Sri Jayewardenepura thanked their Lecturer-in-Charge, Prof. Theshini Perera, for her unwavering guidance and support throughout the course of the practice sessions. They also expressed their gratitude to their past debating captains, Lasni Nishshanke, Manesha Fernando, and Govini Perera, for their valuable input during their practice sessions via Zoom, as well as to Hirusha Liyanage, who extended his support by being present at the competition day. They acknowledged the encouragement they received from the Head of the Department of Chemistry, Prof. Champa Jayaweera, and the other lecturers of the department.
The team also appreciated Dr. Kushan Weerasiri, Chairperson of the Inter- University Debating Committee and the Institute of Chemistry Ceylon for providing them with an opportunity to showcase their skills and engage in intellectual discussions as young scientists.
