Workshop: Ethics First: A Student’s Guide to ERC Applications and Responsible Research

The Ethics Review Committee of the Faculty of Applied Sciences (ERC-FAS) successfully conducted a workshop on “ERC Application Procedure” on Thursday, 31st July 2025. The session was organized to assist undergraduate and postgraduate students in understanding the procedures and requirements for obtaining ethical clearance for their research proposals.

Prof. Chamari Dissanayake, Chairperson of the ERC-FAS, and Dr. Anuradha Ariyaratne, Secretary of the ERC-FAS, served as the resource persons. The workshop covered several key areas essential for preparing the ERC application. It began with an introduction to research ethics, followed by step-by-step guidance on completing the ERC application form. Participants were advised on common mistakes to avoid were provided with detailed instructions on preparing necessary attachments, such as consent forms, information sheets, and questionnaires.. The session also emphasized how to effectively address ethical concerns within a research study, ensuring that students are well-equipped to meet required ethical standards in their academic research. A dedicated Q&A session at the end allowed participants to clarify individual queries related to their research, making the event highly interactive and engaging.

The workshop reflects the ERC-FAS’s strong commitment to maintain high ethical standards in research. The Faculty of Applied Sciences extends its appreciation to the ERC for organizing this valuable session and for fostering a strong culture of ethical and responsible research within the faculty.
