The Ethics Review Committee of the Faculty of Applied Sciences (ERC-FAS) successfully conducted the workshop titled “Ethics First: A Student Guide to Ethical Clearance Applications and Responsible Research” on 21st May 2026 at the Blended Learning Centre (BLC), University of Sri Jayewardenepura.
We are pleased to report that more than 95 participants attended the session, reflecting the growing interest and awareness among students and researchers regarding ethical research practices and the importance of obtaining ethical clearance.
The workshop was facilitated by Dr. Sashie Abeywickrema , Senior Lecturer, Department of Food Science and Technology, Faculty of Applied Sciences. She delivered an insightful and engaging session, guiding participants on how to complete ethical clearance applications, while also emphasizing the fundamental importance of research ethics, ethical responsibility, participant protection, and integrity in research.
Participants actively engaged throughout the workshop, contributing to thoughtful discussions, raising practical concerns, and asking insightful questions related to ethical approval procedures, informed consent, and the preparation of supporting documents. The interactive nature of the session reflected the strong commitment of students and researchers toward conducting responsible and ethically sound research.
The ERC-FAS sincerely appreciates the dedication, time, and expertise shared by Dr. Abeywickrema in making this workshop a highly valuable learning experience for all participants.
