We would like to inform you that registration for the SLAAS poster competition is coming soon. The SLAAS Poster competition is an annual poster competition organized by the Sri Lanka Association for the Advancement of Science (SLAAS). This is an all-island inter-university competition, which allows you to showcase your presentation, communication, and interpersonal skills. This will be an excellent opportunity for career advancement. To represent our university in this poster competition, the Department of Chemistry, FAS, USJ is selecting one student team for each of the following themes given below.
1. Theme 1 – Chemical approaches for sustainable urban waste management
2. Theme 2 – Innovations in nanotechnology for clean water and sanitation
We would like to invite student teams (composed of 05 students for each team) to register for the selection rounds conducted by the Chemistry Department. The student teams who are interested can submit duly completed registration forms (attached below) to Dr. Chandima Narangoda (narangoda@sjp.ac.lk) indicating the poster theme and the team details on or before April 26th, 2024. All teams will be accepted until this deadline. The submissions after this date, incomplete forms, and forms which do not comply with the criteria will not be accepted. The two (02) student teams who will be selected (one for each theme) from the initial selection rounds will be nominated to the SLAAS poster competition to represent the University.

Dr. Laksiri Weerasinghe and Dr. Ranga Jayakody, Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Applied Sciences, University of Sri Jayewardenepura, received SUSRED Awards-2023 for supervising the MPhil degree of Ms. Yasuri Amarasekara under the title of Improving the stability of XLAsp-P2 peptide through nano-conjugation. Prof Inoka C Perera from the Department of Zoology and Environmental Sciences, University of Colombo, and Dr Nuwanthi Katuwavila from NSBM Green University also contributed as co-supervisors for this project.
The guest lecture on “Industrial Perspectives on Science Graduates and Future Trends in Industries” was held on the 11th of March, 2024, by one of our USJ Alumni, Mr. Janaka Weerasooriya, Global QHES Manager and Global Food Safety Team Leader at Jiffy Group.
This informative session provided insights into the skills needed by industries, the available opportunities, and the challenges in different sectors. It was a valuable opportunity for our postgraduate students to learn about the real-world applications of their studies. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Mr. Janaka Weerasooriya for sharing his expertise and knowledge with us.
