Department of Food Science & Technology (DFST), Faculty of Applied Sciences, University of Sri Jayewardenepura (USJ) has been selected by the Curtin University, Australia to share traditional food technology knowledge with their undergraduate students in Food Science. Prof. Ranil Coorey from Curtin University has paid a visit on 04th December 2023 to the DFST along with two students. They were warmly welcomed by Dr. Isuru Wijesekara, Coordinator of the program, Dr. Piumi Abeysundara, Head of the Department along with the academic staff. This study visit focusses on the traditional food technologies of Sri Lanka and development of novel functional food products.
The largest Agriculture-based processed food packaging expo, Profood Propack and Agbiz 2023, is a must-attend event for all businesses working in processed food, packaging, and agriculture is Profood Propack & Agbiz in 2023, according to the event’s planners, who have planned a number of concurrent activities to market and promote the event. This expo featured a wide variety of agriculturally based products with cutting-edge package designs. Profood Propack & Agbiz will draw all stakeholders from the retail and wholesale Food Beverage service sectors because it is Sri Lanka’s sole Agriculture, Food & Packaging industry event, resulting in new contacts and new business for everyone involved. Profood Propack & Agbiz 2022 also encompassed industries like agriculture, horticulture, poultry, livestock, and many more that generate income.
This event was a massive opportunity for the university students to be exposed to the industry and to get experience and explore the food sector. Seizing the occasion we, the Department of Food Science and Technology in collaboration with Association of Food Science and Technology had participated in this enormous event for the 14th consecutive year which hold on 4th, 5th and 6th of August 2023.

Department of Food Science & Technology (DFST), Faculty of Applied Sciences, University of Sri Jayewardenepura (USJ) has initiated a PhD research exchange program with RMIT University, Australia. Prof. Jayani Chandrapala from RMIT University has paid a visit on 20 th December 2022 to the DFST and she was warmly welcomed by Dr. Isuru Wijesekara, Coordinator of the program, Prof. J.M.J.K. Jayasinghe, Head of the Department and two Research Group Leaders: Prof. S. B. Navaratne and Prof. R. A. U. J. Marapana along with the all-academic staff. This doctoral research collaboration focusses on the application of resistant starches and development of functional malted food products. Snr. Prof. Sudantha Liyanage, Vice-Chancellor and Snr. Prof. K. K. D. S. Ranaweera, Chair Professor acknowledged the valued opportunity granted by Prof. Chandrapala and extended their well wishes to the success of the two projects.
