The highly anticipated grand finale of the “3 Minute Research Thesis (3MT®)” Presentation Competition was held on 16th of October 2019 at Taj Samudra Hotel, Colombo during the SLAYS (Sri Lanka Academy of Young Scientists) conference 2019. This competition was conducted under the guidance of the University of Queensland, Australia who developed 3MT®. A number of MPhil/PhD postgraduates from local universities contested for the title this year as well. From them, top10 young scientists were selected as finalists.

Miss. Hemavaruni Nisansala Fernando, a final year Master of Philosophy student as well as a research assistant in the Department of ChemistryFaculty of Applied Sciences, University of Sri Jayewardenepura presented her research work on “Antimicrobial The activity of Garcinol Mediated Metal Nanoparticles and Metal Complexes” at the competition in front of an audience of 150 persons from various walks of life.

The People’s Choice award (most popular research presentation), sponsored by Hayleys Aventura and presented by Mr. Wasaba Jayasekera (Managing Director, Hayleys Aventura) went to the finalist Miss. Fernando. She carries out her research work under the guidance of Dr. Suneth Rajapaksha (Principal supervisor), Prof. Pradeep Jayaweera and Dr. Upul Kumarasinghe from Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Applied Sciences, University of Sri Jayewardenepura, Prof. Neluka Fernando and Dr. Chinthika Gunasekara from Department of Microbiology, Faculty of Medicine, University of Sri Jayewardenepura and Prof. Preethi Soysa from the Department of Molecular Biology and Biochemistry, Faculty of Medicine, University of Colombo.
