Why study Statistics?
Statistics is an extremely diverse discipline, which has applications in almost every scientific field. It offers a wide range of career opportunities in many fields such as Agriculture, Education, Medicine, Biological Sciences, Economics, and Marketing etc. Professionals in such fields require sound knowledge in applied statistics in order to solve their statistical problems in practical situations. By studying statistics, they gain knowledge in understanding, designing and carrying out statistical research in abroad range of fields.
History of the Postgraduate Diploma / M.Sc. Degree Programme in Applied Statistics at University of Sri Jayewardenepura.
The first ever self-financed postgraduate program in Sri Lanka, namely the postgraduate program in Statistics, was started in 1968by the Department of Mathematics of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura. The Department of Statistics and Computer Science restructured and renamed that program as the M.Sc. Degree/Postgraduate Diploma program in Applied Statistics in 1997.
The programme introduces many key areas including elementary statistics and probability, essential statistical methods and essential statistical methods. The total programme, including lectures and examinations, requires approximately 92 working Saturdays. Total duration of the M.Sc. program is approximately 2 years.
Bachelor’s Degree from a recognized university or an equivalent institute recognized by the University Grants Commission. Knowledge in arithmetic and elementary algebra is required for those who follow the Postgraduate Diploma. Additional knowledge in calculus and matrix algebra is required for those who proceed to the M.Sc. Degree in Applied Statistics. Fluency in written and spoken English is essential. Basic knowledge in computer programming will be beneficial.
