The Faculty of Applied Sciences (FAS), University of Sri Jayewardenepura, has been awarded a prestigious Grade A (Very Good) in the recent Programme Review conducted by the Quality Assurance Council (QAC) of the University Grants Commission (UGC), Sri Lanka, reflecting its sustained commitment to academic excellence, quality assurance, and continuous improvement. The review covered four Bachelor of Science Honours degree programmes: Environmental Management and Forestry, Chemistry, Aquatic Resource Management, and Food Science and Technology, and was carried out by a distinguished panel of senior academics from Sri Lankan state universities with extensive expertise in higher education, curriculum development, research, and quality assurance.
The panel commended the Faculty’s strong leadership, effective governance structure, and well-established quality assurance framework, noting the presence of clear strategic direction and a deeply embedded ethos of quality enhancement across all levels of the institution. They further recognized the dedication of both academic and non-academic staff in fostering an environment of excellence, innovation, and collaboration, supported by a strong academic profile of highly qualified staff with national and international recognition. In addition, the panel highlighted the Faculty’s student-centred teaching and learning environment, strengthened by modern smart classrooms, advanced laboratory facilities, and effective implementation of outcome-based education, ensuring high-quality learning experiences. The programmes were acknowledged for their strong relevance to industry and societal needs, demonstrated through stakeholder engagement, curriculum responsiveness, industrial training opportunities, and experiential learning components, which have contributed to strong graduate employability and workforce readiness.
