Prof. Thilini Mudiyanselage, a researcher from the Department of Polymer Science, Faculty of Applied Sciences, University of Sri Jayewardenepura, has been named one of two global winners of the 2026 Elsevier Foundation Chemistry for Climate Action Challenge, an international competition recognizing innovative green chemistry solutions that address climate change and promote sustainable resource use.

Prof. Mudiyanselage received the award for her project, “From Waste to Resource: Sawdust Reborn as a Solution to Deforestation,” which explores the transformation of timber waste, particularly sawdust, into durable and sustainable alternatives to conventional wood materials. In recognition of this achievement, she was awarded USD 25,000 prize to further advance her research.

The project was carried out in collaboration with Dr. Amila K. Jeewandara of the University of Kelaniya. Together, the researchers are developing innovative approaches to maximize the value of timber by-products, addressing both environmental sustainability and the growing global challenge of deforestation.

The idea behind this project was shaped by a simple yet powerful question: are we fully utilizing the resources we already have? Growing up and working in a context where economic challenges demand efficiency and resilience, Prof. Mudiyanselage developed a strong belief in making the most of available materials. This perspective, shared and strengthened through collaboration, continues to drive her research and innovation.

Deeply motivated by both environmental responsibility and personal experience, her work reflects a commitment to turning waste into opportunity. Through her research, she aims to contribute to a more sustainable and resource conscious future while actively engaging with global scientific communities to learn, collaborate, and create meaningful impact.
